Start with the question, not the loudest claim

“Is there research?” is too broad to be useful. A better starting point is to ask what is being checked: the identity of a molecule, the result of a particular experiment, the state of human research, a product batch, or a supplier’s policy. Different sources answer different questions.

A study may describe a finding in its own model. A review may map a field. A trial registry may show what was planned or is underway. A certificate of analysis may report a test for a named batch. None of these is automatically evidence for a different question.

A practical source hierarchy

  1. Original research papers. Best when you need to inspect the actual model, methods, measurements, limitations and disclosures behind a specific result. Read the full record where possible, not only an abstract or quotation.
  2. Systematic reviews and evidence syntheses. Useful for seeing how authors searched for studies, what they included and how consistent the wider findings appear. Check the date, scope and methods; a review is not a substitute for every underlying paper.
  3. Clinical-trial registries and regulatory sources. Useful for checking the stated status of a registered study or an official regulatory decision. A registered trial is not the same as a published result, and a study in progress does not establish an outcome.
  4. Reference databases and academic institutions. Good starting points for terminology, indexing and links to primary literature. Use them to locate the record, then evaluate the evidence in context.
  5. Supplier documentation. Useful for questions about what a supplier says about a product, lot or test. It is commercial documentation, not independent clinical or safety evidence.
  6. Marketing pages, social posts and search snippets. Useful only as leads to trace back to a primary source. They should not be the endpoint of research.

Match the source to the claim

Before accepting a statement, write down the claim in one sentence and ask what source would be capable of supporting it. A statement about a laboratory outcome needs the relevant study. A statement about a batch needs a document that identifies that batch and the testing method. A statement about an approved medical use needs an official, jurisdiction-specific regulatory source.

This is especially important when language shifts from “has been studied” to “works,” “is safe” or “is pharmaceutical grade.” Those are not interchangeable statements, and a source that supports one may not support another.

Five checks before you rely on a source

  1. Traceability: Can you find the original record, journal page, registry entry, laboratory report or official document?
  2. Specificity: Does it identify the same molecule, formulation, model, batch or question being discussed?
  3. Scope: What does the source actually measure, and what does it leave unanswered?
  4. Independence: Who produced the source, who funded it and what commercial interest is disclosed?
  5. Currency: Is it current enough for a claim that can change, such as a trial status, policy or supplier documentation?

Research evidence and product records are different tracks

It is tempting to join a scientific paper and a supplier product page into one conclusion. They answer separate questions. A paper can discuss a research topic, while a product document can report what a supplier says was tested for a particular lot. Neither turns the other into proof of a product’s safety, efficacy or suitability for human use.

A note-taking method that prevents overstatement

For each source, record: the full citation or URL, publication or update date, source type, exact question answered, model or document scope, key limitation, funding or commercial context, and a direct quote-free summary in your own words. Finish with two short lines: “This source supports…” and “This source does not establish…”.

That second line is not a weakness. It is what makes a research summary transparent and useful.

When sources conflict

Do not resolve a disagreement by choosing the source with the strongest wording. Check whether the sources ask the same question, use the same model, report the same outcome and were published at different times. Differences in design and scope often explain an apparent contradiction.

If the uncertainty remains, state it plainly. A careful conclusion can be narrower than a headline and still be more informative.
