Start with the right question

A COA is a record for a particular material or batch. It is not a universal guarantee about every product a supplier sells, and it is not evidence of safety, clinical efficacy or suitability for human use. The useful question is narrower: does this document provide a traceable, intelligible result for the specific lot being considered?

Quality guidance for regulated active pharmaceutical ingredients expects a certificate to identify the material, batch and release date, list the tests performed, show acceptance limits and provide numerical results where results are numerical. Research-material vendors are not automatically operating under those same rules, but those fields are a helpful benchmark for reading any COA critically.

1. Match the document to the batch

Look first for the product name, a lot or batch number, and a certificate or report identifier. A lot number is what connects the PDF or lookup page to a physical production run. If the product page, label and COA cannot be matched through a lot number, the document may still be informative, but its traceability is weaker.

  • Does the product name match the material being discussed?
  • Is there a distinct lot or batch number rather than only a generic product title?
  • Is a test date, release date or issue date shown?
  • Does the document name the testing laboratory or responsible quality unit?

A current, lot-specific document is usually more useful than a generic example. A very high result attached to an unidentified or old batch should not be treated as evidence for current inventory.

2. Read the test, not only the headline percentage

“99% purity” is not a complete analytical story. A careful COA states which test was performed, what specification was used and what result was obtained. For peptide materials, documents often mention chromatographic methods such as HPLC and identity-related techniques such as mass spectrometry. Each method answers a different question.

  • Identity: whether the material is consistent with the stated substance under the method used.
  • Purity or assay: the reported proportion measured by a stated procedure; the calculation and detection limits matter.
  • Impurities: whether individual impurities, residual solvents, water content or other relevant attributes were tested and reported.

Chromatography can support a purity result, while mass spectrometry can support molecular-mass identification. Neither phrase, by itself, tells the reader every property of the material or proves that a method was validated for every intended purpose. ICH analytical guidance treats specificity, accuracy, precision and reportable range as distinct performance characteristics; this is why a method name alone is not the same thing as a complete quality assessment.

3. Compare specification with result

A strong document separates the acceptance criterion from the actual measurement. For example, “specification: not less than 98.0%; result: 99.13%” is more informative than “purity: 99%.” The first lets the reader see the threshold, the measured value and whether the material passed that stated criterion.

Watch for ambiguous language such as “typical,” “target” or an unexplained “>99%.” It may describe a marketing claim or a release goal rather than the observed result for that lot. A number without a method, lot and test context should be treated cautiously.

4. Check the document's traceability

Useful traceability details include the issuer's name and address, report date, analyst or authorized signatory where applicable, sample identifier and a way to locate the original record. A supplier-run lookup system can improve traceability when it returns a lot-specific document, but it remains supplier-provided documentation unless the laboratory and report can be independently verified.

Third-party testing is a meaningful additional fact only when the document identifies the laboratory and the relationship between sample, lot and result can be followed. “Third-party tested” without an accessible report is a claim that still needs verification.

5. Know the limits of a COA

A COA can support a limited conclusion about the batch and tests it describes. It does not by itself establish manufacturing practices, chain of custody after release, sterility, endotoxin status, stability during shipping, regulatory status, safety or efficacy. Those questions require different evidence and, in some cases, different tests.

Regulatory quality guidance also makes a useful general point: relying on a supplier's COA is not meant to replace supplier qualification and periodic confirmation. For readers, the parallel is simple: do not use one attractive certificate as the sole basis for a broad trust claim about a company.

A practical COA checklist

  1. Confirm the product name and exact lot number.
  2. Check the issue, test or release date.
  3. Identify the laboratory or issuer and whether the report is accessible in full.
  4. Read the stated method for identity, purity and any other attributes.
  5. Separate the acceptance limit from the actual numerical result.
  6. Note what was not tested or not reported.
  7. Compare the document with other current, lot-specific and independent evidence.
